Cullasaja Falls
Cullasaja Falls
Western North Carolina

Cullasaja Falls is a waterfall that was likely known to Native Americans in western North Carolina. This colorful, scenic, landscape photograph suggests peace and meditation. The word Cullasaja comes from the frequently-used Cherokee word Kulsetsiyi or Kulsetsi which means “Sugar Town.” These cascades are located on the Cullasaja River near Highlands, North Carolina. The waterfall is near an important Cherokee town called Nikwasi or Nucassee that is now known as Franklin.

Provenance

“Cullasaja Falls” was one of approximately 20-25 images that were exhibited as part of a group show by the Carolinas' Nature Photographers Association (CNPA). The non-juried show was exhibited at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, North Carolina, in their Nature Art Gallery, from July 4 - July 27, 2008.
