Sea Shell
Eastern North Carolina
This photograph shows a wave breaking over a triton seashell in the sand. Triton shells are formed by the mollusks that live in them. The interior of the shell has a spiral design and the exterior has large nodules or protrusions that help the mollusk protect itself. Ancient sea faring peoples often removed or drilled the tip of large shells and used them as trumpets and a means of communicating between boats or outrigger canoes. This example of marine life would make a great gift for someone who likes water, beaches, the ocean, or travel to tropical coasts.
Provenance
“Sea Shell” was awarded a Student Merit Award by CreativeShake.com (formerly Portfolios.com) in June 2008. Go to CreativeShake.com’s 2008 awards and select the image title to view it. |
