Artist statement

Hi! My name is Anne Gaal (rhymes with "smile") and I'm excited to be sharing my photographs with you. I love animals, being outdoors, and discovering new places – and this is reflected in my photography. I like to think that, through my images, I can encourage others to take better care of animals and our environment.

I prefer to take tightly cropped photos that allow me to concentrate attention on my subjects. This includes simplifying the background so the focus goes straight to the important details. I like to get in close and really “see” something well – the light, the contrasts, the shapes, the textures, and the rich vibrant colors.

Photography is an adventure for me. I rarely set out with the final image already formed in my mind. Instead, I love to explore and almost stumble across my subjects, waiting for just the right moment to capture my discovered treasures forever in a photograph. This lets me show the unique personalities of my subjects in my images – even an outdoor scene can have a distinct personality or mood. And, never knowing what I’ll find keeps my work exciting, fresh, and fun!

Portrait of Anne Gaal

Generally, I use a digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera – although I occasionally use film or point-and-shoot cameras. I like using the digital format, because it lets me see my pictures almost instantly. Digital also makes it easier for me to process my photos in my “digital darkroom” and more quickly prepare them for sale as prints and gifts.

I sell my work exclusively online, at http://www.gaalphotography.com. Having an online store allows my photography to be available 24/7 and makes it easier for me to be out in the field doing what I love: taking photographs.

I have sold my photographs in 3 countries: the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. In the U.S., I have sold my photographs in 23 states: Arizona (AZ), California (CA), Colorado (CO), Connecticut (CT), Delaware (DE), Florida (FL), Georgia (GA), Indiana (IN), Kentucky (KY), Maryland (MD), Michigan (MI), Missouri (MO), Nebraska (NE), New Jersey (NJ), New York (NY), North Carolina (NC), Ohio (OH), Oregon (OR), Pennsylvania (PA), Rhode Island (RI), South Dakota (SD), Tennessee (TN), and Texas (TX).

Thank you for taking an interest in me and my photography.

Biography

My grandmother gave me my first Brownie camera when I was about 6 years old. I loved shooting pictures with it – whether it actually contained film or not – and took it with me on all sorts of adventures. I entered my first photography contest in the 7th grade and placed with a pinhole camera photograph of a fire hydrant. I have been taking pictures nearly all my life, but only recently devoted myself full-time to my photography, after 16+ years as a technical writer and Web developer. I am having a great time with my new career and hope you enjoy my work!

Some of my favorite books:

Great book about finding out what you need in your work life ... and how to get it.

Just what it sounds like! How to get things done in all areas of your life.

Visit the "GTD" Web site and request the two workflow diagrams for free. The first diagram shows you the basic steps. The second (which I like better) helps you figure out which part of your system might need tweaking if you're feeling stressed.

If you like the GTD program, you may also like the free software from Thinking Rock that will help you track your to do list on a computer.

Beautiful book about allowing yourself the freedom to be yourself and to express what makes you uniquely you.

A 12-week program about freeing your inner creative self.

This is a great book about photography basics. Yes, I know it is expensive, but try getting a used version or checking it out of the library. It is easy to read with a magazine style layout and can really help you learn a lot about your camera and taking better photographs.
